Pre-WARNING for Americans: Buy a version which includes English subtitles

For anyone interested in the history of reggae, marijuana, or just plain social justice - this movie and soundtrack has it all. The movie is the story of ivan O'Martin, a Jamaican from the country who decides to try his luck in the big city (kingston, Jamaica) after his grandma dies. He can't get a break throughout the movie, so he turns to a life of Robin Hood-type crime. For ganjaheadz, this movie has the biggest joints and hits you've ever seen (not to mention some beautiful plants). Anyone who has ever had tough breaks in their life, or wanted to make an impact on the world, will identify with the main character --> although it is also a commentary on 1970s Jamaican society, the clergy, the U.S. role in the marijuana trade, police and government corruption, etc.
Historically, this is the movie that introduced the United States to Reggae. It was also the first Jamaican movie to make it big - it lasted as a "Midnight Movie" in the U.S. for a good seven years before VHS killed the Midnight Movie. Only "Rockers" has come even close to approaching the popularity of this movie to come out of Jamaica. It was also the first jamaican movie to speak in local patois, rather than King's English.
Watch the movie first - you will then feeled compelled to buy the soundtrack. Most american listeners will recognize "Many Rivers to Cross" even if they don't know Jimmy Cliff by name. The more astute pop culture afficianado may recognize the song, "You Can Get it if you Really Want" as it has been featured in many commercials; and Jimmy Cliff himself, who also appeared in the 1986 Robin Williams flop "Club Paradise".

Afterwards, you will find yourself singing, "you can get it if you really want, you can get it if you really want, but you must try, try and try, try and try . . . you'll succeed at last..." doo-doo doo doo doo doo-doo doo - Unsubscribed , posted 07/16/06
